Ruby was born in Sleepy Hollow, New York, in the year 2035. Her hometown was boring, a side effect of being one of the world's safest places to live, if you weren't superstitious. Life wasn't rough, but it wasn't easy being the only child of a U.S. Army General who was in active duty. Though her mother died during Ruby's birth, she didn't have to travel with her father as he moved from base to base just before going into tours of active combat. She instead lived with her aunt, in the house that her aunt and her father grew up in, while her father was away. She breezed through school, and was an easy child to raise, even given the circumstances. She was the social type, easygoing and on good terms with just about everyone in her hometown. One of the only really odd things about her was that whenever she was upset, or under too much stress for her to handle (Which wasn't often), electronics went on the fritz, sometimes even shorting out. This was naturally kept a secret, she hid it even from her father. Apart from this, her life was as normal as it could be until the summer after her sophomore year in high school, when she was almost 17. She took a vacation to Egypt for three weeks during the hottest time of the year, but she wasn't disturbed by the heat so much as she was amazed. One day during the trip, she took the time to shop around for souvenirs to take back home for her father and aunt, letting herself wander the streets. Pretty soon she found herself near the entrance of a back alleyway, with one solitary stand about three feet inside. No one seemed to notice the merchant's calls beside Ruby, in fact people were really skirting around the entrance of the alleyway, as if they didn't want to get trapped in there. Ruby, being naturally curious, decided to speak to the merchant without a second thought. The merchant sold amulets, said to have magical powers, and told Ruby that it was hard getting business in a place populated by so many magic-fearing people. Ruby was of course skeptical at this, but decided to help the man by buying one, and asked for the most valuable one. This amounted to roughly 600 U.S. dollars, which Ruby had more than enough from a number of odd jobs back home. At this, the merchant reached into the back of his stand, and produced a small, steel box with a lock on it. He told Ruby while unlocking it, "I only give these to those most genuinely generous. You deserve this one". Inside the box was an amber amulet, 1 1/2" wide, 2" long, and half an inch thick. There was a solitary scarab beetle trapped inside the amber. "It's beautiful" Ruby said as she reached for the amulet. Before she could touch it though, the merchant warned her, "Once it's yours, I will not take it back. It will stay with you. Forever". Ruby wasn't swayed by this, and picked it up. The instant she touched it, there was a massive discharge of electricity around her, practically in a column, marking the ground with black scorch marks in a jagged circle. Ruby's mind was swarmed with information, and in an instant, she learned how to control the energy in herself, and around her. In other words, the amulet was magic, and it gave Ruby the knowledge to use magic. While it only happened in an instant, when it was over, the merchant was gone, and there were no signs of there even being a stand in the alley. Ruby then ran through crowded streets back to her hotel for a place where she was alone. Once she had the door locked and the windows closed, she looked into the hand mirror that she brought with her, and nearly dropped it. While Ruby's mind had been swarmed with the knowledge of magic, her eyes had turned jet black, as if burned by what now lay behind. Reaching into her mind with the newfound knowledge, she summoned what energy she could to test her magic out, saying a few seemingly jumbled syllables under her breath. The result was a massive gust of wind swirling in her room momentarily, even though the window was closed, picking up anything that was light enough and sending it into a wall. Ruby spent the remainder of her stay learning how to control her magic, and also took to wearing sunglasses at all times. Once Ruby arrived back in the U.S., she received a letter in the mail concerning a new opportunity for her schooling, something about an academy that knew of her new secret.
